 With Plácido Domingo

January 17, 2009, New Orleans
Internationally renowned tenor Plácido Domingo performed in the New Orleans Opera - Mahalia Jackson Theater.

“Let me show you a world where all I want to have is my voice.”

Marlena grew up with an actress-vocalist mother and multi-instrumentalist father. She began singing and reciting poetry at the age of three. At seven, she began to study piano under Ryna Krysiak, followed by intense study under Elaine Felder at the Music Institute of Chicago, leading her to receive superior ratings and medals at Chicago-area piano competitions. In seventh grade, she began tapping back into her other musical talents, joining her middle and high schools’ choirs, showchoir, musical productions, creative theater productions, dance group, as well as small choreographing and conducting projects. Marlena has also been a growing recording artist on the side, participating in open projects for the past eight years. She has been a member of Polish folklore group “Polonia” in middle and high school, through which she had the opportunity to participate in performance trips to festivals in Taiwan, Hungary, and Poland, as well as to perform for Pope John Paul II in Rome and Israel.

Now, Marlena is studying music education in voice at Loyola University New Orleans. In addition to studying and performing in New Orleans, she has found an interest in organizing concerts, such as one for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. She recently discovered the world of jazz, in which she hopes to increasingly become more involved in. Eventually, she would like to be a consistent vocal performer in the jazz, experimental, and/or classical areas, teach secondary choirs, and in time become a high school board administrator.

Marlena credits her motivation and artistic development to her “crazy” parents, the wonderful community at Showchoir Camps of America, passionate instructors, and artists who pursue their dreams simply for aesthetic and self-fulfilling reasons. She performs with the Marianna Band as a guest vocalist during various seasons, as well as performs psalms and classical repertoire during wedding ceremonies.

In 2009, Marley Dzis graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans. Currently, after having obtained her bachelor's degree in music education, along with a minor in jazz studies, she is pursuing a master's degree in music at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
